remember a time when you could browse around a market and
find loads of variety, handcrafted goods and lots of different
ideas. These days there is a rather samey feel about most
markets, mounds of mass produced items that have very little
to do with the imagination and nothing at all to do with arts
and crafts.
At the most entertaining Paella Arrock recently in Alora,
I had the pleasure of meeting a young lady called Ylenia,
who maintains that old spirit of creativity, designing and
hand producing a fascinating array of costume jewellery and
artistic gift ideas. Ylenia, who studied to be a journalist,
but then decided to do something completely different, uses
a variety of fabrics, beads and other unusual material.
“I get my inspiration from everything around me,”
she said, “the people I see, the countryside, films
and by surfing on the internet.”
With her mind permanently scanning new possibilities, Ylenia
admitted that she often wakes up in the middle of the night
with new ideas, making quick sketches in a notebook that she
always has beside her.
“I enjoy it very much,” she said, “I find
it relaxing and it brings me a great deal of pleasure.”

Recuerdo
una época en la que podías pasear por un mercado
y encontrar una gran variedad de artículos hechos a
mano y muchas ideas diversas. Hoy día la mayoría
de los mercados son muy parecidos entre sí, llenos

En el reciente festival Paella Arrock en Alora, tuve el placer
de conocer a una joven señorita llamada Ylenia, que
mantiene ese viejo espíritu de la creatividad, diseñando
y produciendo a mano un surtido fascinante de joyería
y de ideas artísticas para regalar. Ylenia, que estudió
para ser periodista, pero luego decidió hacer algo
totalmente diferente, utiliza una variedad de telas, cuentas
y otros materiales inusuales.
“Me ispiro en todo lo que me rodea,” dice, “la
gente que veo, el campo, el cine y navegando por Internet.”
Con su mente explorando permanentemente nuevas posibilidades,
Ylenia admite que a menudo se levanta en mitad de la noche
con nuevas ideas, haciendo bosquejos rápidos en un
cuaderno que siempre lleva consigo.
“Lo disfruto mucho,” dice, “para mi es algo
relajante y me aporta mucho”.
