Paella Rock
Live music at the Canca Bar in Alora, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain

Games before the paella Andres serves up the paella Candi from Hombres Solos
Dressed in ankle high orange basketball boots, lengthy black shorts and orange shirts with prison numbers from Alcatraz Psycho Ward, the three members of the Granada based pop and roll group Hombres Solos marched in single file towards the stage. Taking their positions in an orderly fashion, they picked up their instruments, perhaps like workers on a chain gang, and then they bust their shackles wide open, blasting their music far into the powder blue, Andalucian sky, a joyful celebration of freedom of expression, the power of rock and roll.
Earlier, organiser of the event, Gaspar Hilgar, had surfaced from the swimming pool in front of the stage, with his usual broad smile to greet us as we arrived. He had told me about the event a couple of weeks earlier, an impressive line up of six bands, free entry and free paella prepared by Andres, owner of the lovely Canca Bar just outside Alora. In particular Gaspar had told me about the group called Hombros Solos, made up of singer, composer and guitarist José Candido Ariza (Candi), bass player Alberto (Motorhead) and drummer Lorenzo.
“One of the bands is from Granada and they are quite special: they are a pop-rock band that have no manager or record company, but they play live around the country under the ‘do it yourself’ label. The name of the band is Hombres Solos and they are a pretty good example of the many bands that are promoting themselves at the moment through live performances. It would be interesting to interview them. I would like to know many things about how they manage to work, play, travel, book the concerts, etc.”
I checked out the band’s website immediately, www.portalatino.com/hombresolos and got in touch with Candi. Meeting him in person at the gig was a real pleasure.
“I’m just an ordinary guy,” he said, with a mad glint in his eye, “with a nine year old boy, a wife and a mortgage.”
“Ordinary, perhaps,” I said, “and yet at the same time not at all.”
Their performance was slick, entertainingly varied in content and pace and spiced with wicked humour, which went down very well with the crowd. We all wanted more, but the day was one for sharing and they had to make way for the other musicians.
The concert had been opened by a group called Los Mostros del Río Ratón, with Gaspar, a self-confessed ‘dirty punk’ on guitar, Hale on bass and Diego Jorge from the famous Banfield neighbourhood in Argentina on drums. It was an interesting line up of songs, from early blues to modern rock. The sound quality throughout the whole gig was exceptional, monitored very sensitively and professionally by Gaspar himself. Second on the bill were the orange men from the psycho ward, followed by Mañanaoi, with Gaspar again on lead, Hale on a very punchy, solid bass and this time the very young, slight, but mighty Kiki on drums, the three of them going completely nuts, obviously enjoying themselves to the full, while at the same time providing first class entertainment for the lucky poolside paella punters, a fair number of cool dudes actually in the pool itself.
Having to rush away at that point we didn’t see the rest of the groups, unfortunately, but at least I did feel confident that those remaining would get on perfectly well without us!
Gestionindi, which promotes young artists and musicians in the Guadalhorce Valley, is fast becoming a major force in the Andalucian entertainment scene around the Malaga inland area and their drive and energy guarantees that there will be plenty more to come. Paella Arrock

Los Mostros del Río Ratón - in the words of Gaspar:
Los Mostros are well known rascals of the Guadalhorce area. They are a power trio with lots of cousins. Their story is bizarre: the drummer is a kajun from Banfield that came as stowaway. The bass player is from Ukraine and is cousin of Yushchenko. The guitarist is an old man that lives in a "Cortijo" with 230 goats. They met at a bar and had a fight about eating the last porra, then they got close friends.
They play "swamp rock'n'roll" from Muddy Waters to Black Lips including Iggy Pop & the Stooges or covers of weird sixties hits mixed with their own songs. It sounds like garage, stoned country or psychedelia when they get "to the point". Singing in spanish, english, kajun or fake italian and portuguese, and available in different colours, right now!
On tour performing their first record for Chim Pum Productions label
