Another Kind of World is Possible

The poster on the wall outside a shop in Alora caught my attention immediately. A young man was bending down tending a very healthy looking vegetable patch. On his head was a large radio antenna or perhaps satellite receiver.
Piensa globalmente, actua localmente, said the slogan above the man. Think globally, act locally.
The poster was advertising a fund-raising event the following weekend at the Municipal Swimming Pool in the pueblo. We were intrigued, keen as well to see more of our local rock bands performing live on stage. Lucía, one of the organisers, greeted us as we arrived, happy to explain what it was all about.
“We want to promote world peace,” she said.
Me too.
“And we want to help protect the environment,” she added, “we want to encourage reforestation, for example, we have a number of projects in hand.”
Lucía, who is a qualified nurse, was quick to point out that their organisation, OMEP-Alora, is not politically orientated. Having probably as much trust as the next man in the world’s politicians, I was very pleased to hear that.
“It all began when we heard about the Tsunami disaster,” she explained, “a group of friends in Alora got together, appalled at the extent of the tragedy, wanting to do what they could to help.”
The first fund-raising event raised a million pesetas, which was donated to Los Bombaderos Sin Fronteras de Malaga, a voluntary Spanish fire-fighting team that flew out to provide support in Thailand.
“After that we decided to carry on with our efforts,” said Lucía, “one of our next projects being to give necessary inoculations to children in places like Morocco.”
Although the event had a serious objective, the atmosphere was festive, as intended. A huge paella slipped down very well and the bar was extremely busy. Local music celebrities were in attendance, such as Sergio of the wildly popular Devil’s Dandruff, Manolo and Alberto of the excellent rock and roll band Memphis, and the highly versatile rock and flamenco singer El Popi, all of who were more than happy to pose for my hungry camera.
With a warm summer breeze lifting deliciously from time to time, we sat back to enjoy some of the music, which included a spirited performance by the young and very enthusiastic Condor Nuit and the very funky indeed Funkykabrones (Funky Bastards), both new to me, but clearly hot favourites of the local crowd.
It was a good night out and it was good to see people coming together for a worthy cause, OMEP-Alora, which stands for Otro Mundo es Posible, a different kind of world is possible.

Sound engineer El cartel en la pared, fuera de una tienda de Álora, llamó mi atención inmediatamente. Un hombre joven se doblaba trabajando en una huerta que parecía muy sana. En su cabeza había una antena de radio grande o un receptor quizás basado en los satélites. Con el lema: “piensa globalmente, actúa localmente”, el cartel anunciaba actuaciones en la piscina municipal del pueblo como forma de coger dinero para asociaciones. A nosotros nos cautivó la idea de ver a los grupos locales de rock.
Lucía, una de los organizadoras, nos saludó cuando llegamos, y de forma feliz nos explicó cuáles eran sus objetivos: "Deseamos promover paz del mundo," dijo.
Yo también, pensé.
"Y deseamos ayudar a proteger el medio ambiente", añadió, "deseamos animar la repoblación forestal, por ejemplo, tenemos varios proyectos de momento”. Lucía, es enfermera cualificada, y nos precisó que la organización OMEP-Álora no está vinculada con la política.
"Todo comenzó cuando oímos hablar del desastre de Tsunami," explicó, "un grupo de amigos en Álora estaba aterrado por la terrible tragedia y deseando hacer lo que pudieran por ayudar”.
En la primera actuación que hicimos para recaudar fondos conseguimos un millón de pesetas, que fue donado a “Bomberos Sin Fronteras” de Málaga, un equipo formados por bomberos voluntarios, especializados en la lucha contra el fugo, voló para proporcionar ayuda en Tailandia. "Despues, decidimos continuar con nuestros esfuerzos," dijo Lucía, "uno de nuestros proyectos siguientes es dar inoculaciones necesarias a los niños en lugares como Marruecos."
Aunque el acontecimiento tenía un objetivo serio, la atmósfera era festiva, según lo previsto. Una paella enorme nos entró muy bien, mientras el bar estaba lleno de gente. Las celebridades locales de la música estaban allí: Sergio del famoso grupo Devil’s Dandruff, Manolo y Alberto del excelente grupo de rock y roll Memphis, y también estaba el versátil Popi, cantante de rock y flamenco, todos ellos de forma amable accedieron a que les hiciera unas fotografías.
Con una deliciosa brisa de verano que se levantaba a veces, nos sentamos a gozar de la música, que incluyó la actuación de un grupo joven y entusiasmado Condor Nuit y el Funkykabrones quienes eran muy funky. Estos nuevos grupos fueron los favoritos de la muchedumbre.
Fue una buena noche y fue verdaderamente bueno ver venir a tanta gente para colaborar en una causa digna, OMEP-Álora, que significa Otro Mundo es Posible. Otro clase de mundo es posible, aunque difícil de alcanzar, sobre esto no hay ninguna duda, pero hay que intentarlo.
