Sitting in the nearby De Kñas tapas bar in the Avenida Cervantes as we enjoyed a delicious glass of Rioja, we exchanged opinions on the nature of art, the essential elements that make up a good painting, our personal preferences and the relationship between artists and the work they have created. We had been very impressed and we were certainly not the only ones.
There was standing room only on the 19th January in Alora’s Casa de la Cultura at the official opening of the XV111 Certamen de Pintura ‘Ciudad de Alora’, the 18th City of Alora Art Competition. A stirring series of readings by five poets from the book Poemas Escritos a la Vera del Mar was warmly and enthusiastically received by the audience, who were also inspired by the opening speeches of the Town Councillor of Cultural Affairs, Sonia Ramos Jiménez, the Director of the Poetry Competition Jacques Laulheret and the Mayor Jose Sanchez.
The crowd then jostled and wove their way amongst each other to and from a wonderful buffet as they inched their way around the exhibition, their appreciative chatter rising to a crescendo.
I had personally never seen such a brilliant display of artwork and afterwards as we continued chatting in the tapas bar, our views as diverse as the splendid tapas menu, one thing we did agree on was that it would be a very difficult task for the judges to choose a winner for the 4500 euro prize on offer, their only easy agreement, probably being like ours, that the standard was exceptionally high.

Sentados en el bar de tapas, De Kñas en la Avenida Cervantes, gozábamos de un delicioso vaso de vino de Rioja, mientras opinábamos sobre la naturaleza del arte, los elementos esenciales que hacen una buena pintura, nuestras preferencias personales y la relación entre los artistas y el trabajo que han creado. Estábamos impresionados y no éramos ciertamente los únicos.
El día 19 de enero, La Casa de la Cultura de Álora inauguró el XVIII Certamen de Pintura “Ciudad de Álora”, con la presentación del libro “Poemas Escritos a la vera del Mar”, cinco poetas de reconocido prestigio recitaron poemas. Posteriormente, el Alcalde, D. José Sánchez Moreno, la Concejala de Cultura, Dª Sonia Ramos Jiménez y el Director del Certamen de Pintura D. Jacques Laulheret, inagurarón oficialmente el Concurso. El salón de actos de la Casa de la Cultura estaba lleno de gente.
Después de la presentación, todos los asistentes pudieron disfrutar de la exposición de cuadros mientras tomaban una copa del maravilloso buffet que ofreció el Excmo. Ayuntamiento.
¡Nunca había visto una exhibición tan brillante! Mientras continuamos nuestra charla en el bar, convinimos que sería una tarea muy difícil para que el tribunal del Concurso de Pintura “Ciudad de Álora”, seleccionar un ganador para el primer premio valorado en 4500 euro, porque el nivel de los participantes en el Certamen es muy alto.
