Vuelta Ciclista a Andalucia 2007

Ecija through El Chorro, Pizarra,
Alora and finally Abdalajis

First cyclist into Alora

There was great excitement throughout the village on the 22nd February as people gathered at the roadsides waiting for a glimpse of the best 15 cycling teams in the world, made up of 105 competitors, who were scheduled to pass through Alora on the 5th and last stage of the Vuelta Ciclista a Andalucia, the route going from Ecija through El Chorro, Pizarra, Alora and finally Abdalajis.
Children charged about in frantic, imaginary cycle races of their own, a megaphone blasted news of the event from a parked van, policemen murmured repeatedly into mobile phones and a dozens of police motorbikes, police cars and subsidiary vehicles, many carrying spare bicycles on their roof racks, roared through the narrow streets.
It was a long wait, a little chilly for the spectators under a wintry, overcast sky, although the conditions were probably ideal for the cyclists. And when the powerful peddlers finally arrived, accompanied by a vast number of ancillary vehicles, it was all over in a flash. But considering that we were watching some of the fastest cyclists in the world, it would be, wouldn’t it?

Oh, and the winner? Oscar Freire.
